Timeless Travels
These posts span decades of world travel. Sometimes, the more things change, the more they stay the same. It’s why I think of them as timeless travels.
Swiss Rambles
While we were living in Switzerland, temperatures hovered in the upper 90s one summer and the canicule or heat wave made international news. Since few people in Geneva had air conditioning, it was miserable to be in the city and hard to sleep at night.
Footnotes from Tanzania & Zanzibar
It had been my husband's idea to move to Tanzania in 2005. He wanted to accept a job as Director of CDC's AIDS project in Dar es Salaam while I was intrigued by the prospect of living in a country with landscapes like Mount Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti.
Footnotes from Abidjan
I moved to Abidjan with my husband in the early 1990s at the height of the AIDS epidemic when treatment wasn’t available in African countries. He was excited at the prospect of work at an AIDS project run by the CDC while I had huge reservations about taking two small children to Cote d’Ivoire.
A So-Called Sabbatical
After living in Geneva for four years, we decided to spend a few months traveling in Europe before moving back to the U.S. We called it a sabbatical even though it was really an extended vacation before Stefan started his new job in Seattle.
Last Lap in the Lake
You have to brace yourself to swim in a Swiss lake most months of the year. In June, when the summer air entices people outdoors to the beaches around Geneva, the lake is still frigid with snowmelt from nearby mountains. Yet, in July and August, the water can be warm enough to bask in it for hours at a stretch.
